This series spans multiple years and is the combination of the documentation of the contemporary work of Ryan Neil (American Bonsai Professional/Live Sculpturist) and the connective lines between his past practice of bonsai in Saitama, Japan.

Ryan is considered to be one of the world’s leading bonsai practitioners and is often credited as the leader of the American bonsai movement. He currently runs a brand, incubator, school, and nursery under the name Bonsai Mirai.

This series documents the current renaissance within the Western world and Ryan’s return to the garden of his former master, Masahiko Kimura. The images visually connect these two worlds and open the conversation about what lies ahead for this historical art form.
